At-sea inspections of vessels in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Regulatory Area (NRA) in 2004 total 241. Up to three dedicated Canadian patrol vessels were on duty in the NRA, logging 675 patrol days (165 days of which were provided by the Navy). An estimated 2,540 flying hours of aerial surveillance were also dedicated to the NRA (2,000 by DFO through Provincial Airlines Limited and 540 by the Air Force). |

Canada's NAFO inspectors issue citation against the Portuguese vessel, Joana Princesa, for the serious infringement of conducting a directed fishery for American plaice - a moratoria species. Inspectors remain on board vessel until December 28, when French officials in St-Pierre-et-Miquelon review the evidence collected by Canadian inspectors and conduct an inspection on behalf of the European Union (EU). |
