The library staff can help in many aspect of using the library and its resources:
The Institute of Ocean Sciences Library was created in 1972 to support the research activities of the newly established west coast oceanographic research institute. It continues in this role providing a wide range of services to the research staff of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The Library provides the same range of services to the research staff of Natural Resources Canada's Geological Survey of Canada, Pacific, which is housed in the same building complex. Employees of the Canadian Coast Guard Pacific Region Base in Victoria may use and photocopy library materials on site and may borrow library materials. The Library offers limited services to consultants from the local marine research community, as well as research staff of other government and academic facilities in the Victoria area. Members of the public may use and photocopy library materials on site. The Library provides loans and photocopies to other libraries worldwide through international interlibrary loan.
The library has collections in the areas of oceanography, hydrography, ocean research, environmental science, geology, geophysics, seismology and earthquake studies. The Library holds over 80,000 catalogued items, including textbooks, journals, technical reports, and electronic resources. The Library's holdings are accessible through WAVES, the catalogue of the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Libraries.

The Library of the Pacific Biological Station is the oldest and largest of the DFO libraries on Canada's west coast. It has its origins in the collections of Rev. George W. Taylor, which were purchased by the Biological Board of Canada from the estate of the Pacific Biological Station's first curator in 1913. The collections directly support the biological and fisheries investigations of DFO Pacific Region's Science branch, but also will provide information on a wide range of topics concerning British Columbia's marine and freshwater resources. The Library holds an extensive collection of Russian fisheries and oceanographic literature. The Library may be used directly by anyone working on the Pacific Biological Station campus. The public also may visit and use the collections during regular staff hours.
