Facts on High Seas Fish

“Global" or "high seas" fish stocks are fish found beyond a country or continent's 200-mile limit in international waters. Some of these fish are straddling stocks, which means that they are found both within and outside 200-mile limits. Others may be highly migratory species, such as tuna and swordfish. Because these fish don't "belong" to any one country, successful management requires international co-operation. Regional fisheries management organizations (orRFMOs) are the multilateral organizations that manage straddling and other fish stocks that occur in specific regions of the high seas.
