Regional Fisheries Management Organizations
North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC)
The area of competence for the Commission is the waters of the North Pacific Ocean and its adjacent seas, north of 33°N latitude beyond the 200-mile exclusive economic zones of coastal States.
North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO)
The North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization cooperates to ensure the sustained, long-term recovery of salmon stocks that migrate beyond the areas of coastal States' fisheries jurisdiction of the Atlantic Ocean north of 36°N latitude.
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO)
The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization Convention Area encompasses a large portion of the North Atlantic Ocean and includes the 200-mile exclusive economic zones of coastal States jurisdiction (Canada, Denmark in respect of Greenland, France in respect of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, and the United States of America).
It applies to most fisheries resources of the Northwest Atlantic except stocks such as salmon, tuna and marlins, and whales that are managed by other regional fisheries management organizations, and sedentary species of the Continental Shelf.
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Convention area consists of the Western and Central Pacific Ocean, i.e., west of 150° W longitude.
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
The convention area includes the waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean east of 150° W longitude. The Canadian Albacore tuna fishery occurs within the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission and the adjacent Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission Convention Areas; the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission Convention Area includes part of the US and Canadian Exclusive Economic Zones.
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas encompasses all waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the adjacent Seas, including the Exclusive Economic Zones of all coastal states.
