The science surrounding salmon conservation is a primary focus of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO). Over the last 30 years, there has been a significant decline in the overall marine survival of Atlantic salmon. Gaining a better understanding of the factors affecting survival of salmon at sea is critical to ensuring better management of the Atlantic salmon and our ability to rebuild this precious resource.
At the annual NASCO meeting in June 2005, member states agreed to co-operate on a new initiative called SALSEA (Salmon at Sea). SALSEA draws together partners across the North Atlantic, pooling intellectual and scientific resources to find the major causes of marine mortality of Atlantic salmon.
This year’s NASCO meeting is being held in Ivalo, Finland from June 5 to 9.
