The North Atlantic Fisheries Ministers' Conference

The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, hosted the 22nd annual North Atlantic Fisheries Ministers’ Conference in Shediac, New Brunswick, from August 28 to 30, 2017. Minister LeBlanc welcomed ministers and senior representatives from the European Union, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Russia.

The conference offers fisheries ministers an opportunity to discuss a theme of common interest and develop relationships. This year’s discussions considered current fisheries management challenges, such as illegal fishing, catch documentation and marine mammal interactions. It focused on the theme of Marine Conservation Targets: How do we get there? Minister LeBlanc spoke to Canada’s efforts to protect 5% of marine and coastal areas by the end of 2017, and 10% by 2020.
