Yellowtail Flounder

Limanda ferruginea

Yellowtail flounderYellowtail flounder is a groundfish. The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) manages one stock in Division 3LNO.

The following stock assessment is provided by NAFO: www.nafo.int/fisheries/frames/fishery.html

Fishery catches of yellowtail flounder in the NAFO Convention AreaFishery Status 2008 (NAFO): Total Allowable Catch (TAC) was set at 15,500 metric tons (of which 15,112 metric tons are allocated to Canada). Catches were well below the TAC during 2006 and 2007 due to corporate restructuring and a labour dispute in the Canadian fishing industry.

Recent Assessments (2008) concluded that yellowtail flounder stock size has increased slightly since 2002  and is perceived to be at a level well above that of the mid-1980s. As a result, Scientific Council recommended that any TAC option up to 85% Fmsy would be appropriate (24,800 metric tons in 2009 and 22,800 metric tons in 2010). Scientific Council noted that bycatches of cod and American plaice need to be considered.

This stock will next be assessed by NAFO in 2010.
