Notice

On June 29, 2012, the Fisheries Act was amended. Policy and regulations are now being developed to support the new fisheries protection provisions of the Act (which are not yet in force). The existing guidance and policies continue to apply. For more information, see Changes to the Fisheries Act.

What You Need To Do

You have an opportunity to make a difference when doing any work or planning a project near water. Even a small project like building a dock correctly can help protect the aquatic environment where you live. Below is a diagram that shows the process to protect fish and fish habitat that covers everything from the smaller projects like docks (Step 1) or installing some types of road culverts (Step 2) to larger development projects that require a Fisheries Act authorization (Step 3). Chances are you will find the advice for your proposed project in these steps. If not, feel free to contact your local Habitat Management office for advice and support.
