Notice
On June 29, 2012, the Fisheries Act was amended. Policy and regulations are now being developed to support the new fisheries protection provisions of the Act (which are not yet in force). The existing guidance and policies continue to apply. For more information, see Changes to the Fisheries Act.
Step 9: Confirmatory Sampling
During Step 9, confirmatory sampling is conducted to ensure that remedial objectives have been met during and immediately following the implementation of the Risk Management Strategy (RMS). For sites that have been remediated or subjected to risk management, the confirmatory sampling is completed to demonstrate that the contamination has been removed or stabilized effectively and that the rehabilitation objectives have been met.
How to Prepare
- Review:
- the confirmatory sampling design;
- other sampling reports (e.g., pre-activity, reference sites).
What to Do
- Finalize and implement site-specific confirmatory sampling plans.
- Develop and implement an adaptive management plan, if necessary.
- Determine if the risk management objectives were achieved.
- If long-term monitoring (Step 10) is not required, proceed to site closure; Prepare a final report that documents all activities carried out during site remediation, decommissioning, and clean-up, which includes drawings, records, and sampling data.
How Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Expert Support Helps
- Review and provide advice on the results of the confirmatory sampling.
- Advise on the effectiveness monitoring in the protection of fish and fish habitat.
- Provide advice on the design and expectations associated with the long-term monitoring plan.
