Monitoring Results

Fisheries change from year to year, with natural population cycles and changing water conditions, and fisheries management plans must be adjusted accordingly. At the end of each fishing season, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) reviews fisheries management plans to ensure that they support sustainable practices and will continue to do so in the future. These evaluations are used during future planning processes and in consultations with resource users to ensure necessary adjustments are made.  A Fishery Checklist has been developed to help monitor and improve our sustainability in Canada’s fisheries.

Canada will continue to improve and adjust its management of fisheries operations to ensure sustainable fish and seafood from today and in the future.

DFO will continue to improve management plans in consultation with resource users as new fisheries management techniques are developed and as we learn more about the connection among the marine environment, fish stocks, and other aquatic species.

DFO is responsible for providing Canadians with sustainable fisheries, and healthy and productive aquatic ecosystems. Consumers can be confident that Canada will continue to improve and adjust its management of fisheries operations to ensure sustainable fish and seafood from today and in the future.
