Ensuring Seafood Safety

Working together to ensure the safety of Canada's seafood

Traceability – what does it mean?

We have systems in place to “trace” our farmed fish and seafood at every stage of production. We know where fish has been and what’s been done to it. This goes a long way in ensuring its safety.

Fish and shellfish are an important part of a healthy diet. Consumers around the world rely on safe, quality seafood for essential protein and nutrients including omega-3 fatty acids.

Canada has rigorous standards and regulations enforced by Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to ensure that our products do not contain contaminants at levels beyond what the Government of Canada has determined through scientific evaluation to be safe. Many of these safety protocols are the same for all fish and seafood products, whether farmed or wild.
