Sustainability Reporting

We are working on developing a set of performance indicators for sustainability (economic, social and environmental) which will allow us to define and describe the conditions and trends in the aquaculture industry in Canada and document changes over time.

In developing a unique reporting framework for Canadian aquaculture, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has drawn on the work done by the Global Reporting Initiative, as well as the reporting initiatives of other natural resource sectors and aquaculture sector reporting in other countries.

Our first report, due out in 2011, will launch the initiative. Every year, we will be able to chart progress against this benchmark.

The Canadian aquaculture sustainability reporting process will

  • Support national and regional aquaculture development plans
  • Track progress of innovation, research and development
  • Support industry’s certification initiatives
  • Provide Canadians with relevant information on the sustainability of aquaculture in Canada

This work links to the new Federal Sustainable Development Strategy and is an important element of accountability for both industry and government. Following good reporting practices, the Sustainability Report will be balanced and reasonable, addressing both positive and negative conditions and trends.
