The 2001 and 2002 Award recipients are:

The Honourable Robert G. Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans,
presents a National Recreational Fisheries Award to Mr. Raymond Bentley.
Mr. Bentley is a founder of the Port McNeill Chinook Club, a non-profit organization dedicated to the enhancement of fish habitat and stocks as well as the promotion of sound fisheries management. The majority of projects undertaken by the organization have concentrated on improving fish stocks. Most recently, a new hatchery on the Kokish River has been built, replacing the old structure built in 1986. The new hatchery has substantially increased the amount of fish stock released each year, thereby having a direct and positive influence on the recreational fishery.

The Honourable Robert G. Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans,
presents a National Recreational Fisheries Award to Mr. Tom Maccagno.
As mayor of Lac La Biche (1990-1995), Mr. Maccagno was instrumental in
having the provincial walleye and pike task forces established. His
volunteer initiatives as a member of the Lac La Biche Regional Fisheries
Advisory Committee resulted in Alberta Pacific Forest Industries Inc.
agreeing to keep their logging activities beyond the banks of the Owl
River.
Mr. Maccagno is currently director of the Lac La Biche Fisheries
Enhancement Group, which has converted an old sewage lagoon into a trout
pond and recreation area. He is considered the province's conscience with
regard to the fishery.

The Honourable Robert G. Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans,
presents a National Recreational Fisheries Award to Mr. Darryl Choronzey.
For more than 30 years, Mr. Choronzey has been involved in activities that support the sport fishery across Canada. For 25 years he has worked in the media to promote this activity. Mr. Choronzey resided in British Columbia for a number of years where he familiarized himself with the federal government's Salmon Enhancement Program.
Returning to Ontario, he published and edited the Ontario Fisherman, a magazine that informed the public and government about pollution, overfishing and issues related to management. In the field, he was directly involved with the introduction of the Ontario Pacific salmon fishery, the Ontario Steelheaders and the Ontario Community Fisheries Involvement Program.
Living in Owen Sound and as a member of the Sydenham Sportsmen's Association, Mr. Choronzey was instrumental in the creation of the Lake Huron/Georgian Bay salmon fishery and the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular derby. Today, he produces and hosts the cross-Canada television series "Going Fishing," which promotes angling in Canada.

The Honourable Robert G. Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans,
presents a National Recreational Fisheries Award to Mr. James D. Irving.
J.D. Irving Ltd. has been involved with fisheries management since the late 1980s, in particular with salmon and brook trout. New Brunswick has benefited from the company's environmental efforts through cleaner rivers and streams. J.D. Irving Ltd. has been involved in sea-run brook trout research, assessment of salmon population and management options, and instream movements and restocking techniques. There is a better understanding of the benefits of hook-and-release fishing among anglers and the challenges and opportunities to protect salmon as a result of public education. Donations to conservation groups, such as the Atlantic Salmon Federation, the Miramichi Salmon Association and the Atlantic Salmon Museum, have contributed to salmon protection and enhancement.

The Honourable Robert G. Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans,
presents a National Recreational Fisheries Award to Mr. Scott James.
Since 1994, the Corduroy Brook Enhancement Association has prevented further deterioration of Corduroy Brook through the implementation of protective measures to improve water quality, leading to increased fish habitat productivity. The association has worked to augment the natural beauty of the brook's surroundings, built an accessible, scenic trailway along the brook to provide enjoyment for nature enthusiasts, and increased environmental awareness through education of the benefits of a healthy fish habitat.
