National Priorities

The national priorities for the Aboriginal Fund for Species at Risk (AFSAR) Program, the Habitat Stewardship Program and the Interdepartmental Recovery Fund are:

  • Species listed as endangered and threatened under the Species at Risk Act (SARA);
  • Protection of critical habitat;
  • Implementation of high priority activities described in recovery strategies or action plans;
  • Projects that implement, or contribute to the implementation of, geographically-based large scale and multi-species recovery initiatives; and
  • Initiatives that involve collaboration among multiple stakeholders/partners.

National priorities specific to the AFSAR Program are:

  • Projects that identify habitat important to species at risk on Reserves, lands set apart for the use and benefit of Aboriginal peoples under the Indian Act, land claims areas, treaty settlement lands and federal waters; and
  • Activities that support the consideration of Aboriginal traditional knowledge in SARA processes.

Projects addressing one or more national priorities will be considered for funding.
