Welcome to the official Web site of the international Conference on The Governance of High Seas Fisheries and the UN Fish Agreement – Moving from Words to Action.
The Conference will be held May 1–5, 2005, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Intergovernmental representatives from over 45 nations are expected to attend. The world's fish stocks are at an important crossroads. Overfishing is a global problem that demands a global solution. As a nation with coastline on three oceans, Canada has serious concerns about the future of world fish stocks. The Conference will provide an opportunity for the international community to join Canada in determining how management of high seas fisheries can be improved and identifying what steps need to be taken to ensure the immediate protection and rebuilding of fish stocks in the years to come.
Conference participants will undertake an in-depth examination of modern tools to manage high seas fisheries, in particular those found in the United Nations Fish Agreement (UNFA) of 1995, and determine practical ways of applying these tools to better manage global fisheries. Canada is pleased to host this important intergovernmental conference, and looks forward to working with other nations to protect the fish stocks of the world for generations to come. The theme of the Conference – Moving From Words to Action – expresses Canada's commitment to take immediate action on this issue. For more information, contact info@dfo-mpo.gc.ca
