Hydrography

Fee type: O – Other products and services

Fee-setting authority: Financial Administration Act, Oceans Act

Year introduced: 1978

Year last amended: 1996

Performance standard: Orders are shipped to authorized Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) chart dealers within five business days of receipt of the order 95% of the time.

Performance results: In 2016-17, the CHS was successful in meeting its Level of Service to ship orders to authorized CHS dealers within 5 business days of receipt of the order 99% of the time.

Other information: Revenue from paper products remains flat and in some cases in decline.

Fees for CHS paper charts and publications have not changed since 1996, and as a result no longer reflect the cost of printing and distribution. Canada’s paper charts and publications are priced well below those of many developed countries. Canada is also one of the few countries that does not charge shipping and handling fees related to the sale of its products.

CHS has begun a review of its paper product pricing with the aim to better reflect the actual product costs associated with printing and distribution.
