After initial investigations, we are concerned that proper protocols may not have been followed in the testing and reporting of these findings. CFIA and Fisheries and Oceans Canada are working to assess the results through scientifically sound and internationally recognized procedures, which must include additional testing to verify the presence or absence of ISA virus in these samples.

Shellfish Harvesting: Reminder Notice to the Public and Visitors

Îles-de-la-Madeleine – Fisheries and Oceans Canada wishes to remind Magdalen Islands residents and visitors about the regulations and potential dangers related to shellfish harvesting. While visitors and residents alike enjoy harvesting and eating shellfish, bi-valve shellfish, such as clams, scallops, quahogs and mussels, are sensitive to water quality and can become contaminated from bacteria, viruses, toxic algae or chemical pollutants. This contamination is potentially hazardous and, in rare cases, may cause death. It is up to every individual to ensure that his or her shellfish comes from an area that is open for harvesting.

Statement by Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans - Pacific Halibut

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today issued the following statement:

Our Government understands the value and significance of the Pacific halibut fishery to British Columbians. The current sharing formula, which allocates 88% of the harvest to commercial fishermen and 12% to recreational harvesters, has been in place since 2003. Since then there have been a number of attempts by representatives of each sector to develop an acceptable way to transfer allocation between them.
