Northern Shrimp Fishing Areas (SFAs) 0, 1 and 7

Species and Area

Total Allowable Catch (TAC) in Northern Shrimp Fishing Areas (SFAs) 0, 1 and 7.

Dates of season (subject to change)

SFA 0, 1 and 7 operate on a calendar year (January-December).

Total Allowable Catches and Sharing Arrangements (if applicable)

The 2013 Total Allowable Catches are:

SFA 0: 500t
SFA 1: 11,333*
SFA 7: 7,162

* Upon review of the science advice provided by the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization’s (NAFO) Scientific Council for Division 0A east of 60°30W, the Department established an overall TAC of 80,000t for 2013. Canada’s share (17% of the offshore portion) is fished in SFA 1. Individual shares to stakeholders in this SFA will remain at 2004-2008 levels, with the understanding that should the Canadian share of 11,333t be reached, the fishery will be closed.

The Total Allowable Catch (TAC) in Division 3L for 2013 was set by NAFO at 8,600t, down from 12,000t in 2012. Canada’s portion (83.3%) of this quota, fished in SFA 7, is reduced accordingly. This reduction has been applied using a prorated approach and final shares will be as follows:

2013 TAC
Offshore Licence Holders : 1,377t
Inshore : 4,007t
PEI Consortium : 1,500t
Miawpukek FN : 278t
TOTAL : 7,162

Management Measures

The NAFO recommendation to allow Canadian harvesters to fish their quota in the entire 3L Area is presently in effect. Harvesting outside of Canadian waters requires obtaining a Schedule from Conservation and Protection, which must be appended to relevant licences.
