Scallop Fishing Area 28 (Bay of Fundy)

Species and Area

The Scallop Fishing Area (SFA) 28 (Bay of Fundy) scallop fishery occurs in the Bay of Fundy and approaches. The Bay of Fundy is divided into Scallop Production Areas (SPA) for the purposes of stock assessment and management. The Full Bay, Mid Bay and Upper Bay Fleet are authorized to fish in the Bay of Fundy.

The Annual Scallop Fishing Plans for the Full, Mid And Upper Bay Fleets are available electronically or as hard copy by contacting the Maritimes Region Resource Management office.

Dates of season

The Full Bay Fleet season is October 1 to September 30.

The Mid and Upper Bay Fleets season for SPA 1B is the second Tuesday in January to April 30 and then the first Monday in August to September 30.

The Mid Bay Fleet season for SPA 6 is the second Tuesday in January to September 30.

Total Allowable Catches and Sharing Arrangements

The Total Allowable Catch (TAC) has been set at 1070t for the 2012 fishery.

There is an established sharing arrangement for the areas where the fleet access overlaps.

he sharing arrangement is applied to SPA1B and SPA 6. The Full Bay fleet is an ITQ fleet while the Mid and Upper Bay fleets are competitive quota fleets.

Full Bay Fleet quota for 2012 is 803.25t

Mid Bay Fleet quota for 2012 is 226.16t

Upper Bay Fleet quota for 2012 is 40.59t

Management Measures

The fishery is managed with an overall TAC, subarea caps, blended meat count of 45 scallops /500g, and minimum size restriction of 75 mm shell height.

The Full Bay portion of the TAC is allocated by the established percentage share by licence. Temporary quota transfers are permitted. A quota reconciliation process is used to rationalize quota overruns.

The Mid and Upper Bay Fleets each have a TAC and fish competitively

Vessel Monitoring Systems are required and polling is at one hour intervals.
