Species and Area

Quebec Region, Îles-de-la-Madeleine area, Atlantic surf clam in area 5, using a hydraulic dragnet (final plan for 2010).
Atlantic surf clam Area 5 is a coastal zone surrounding the Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Four licenses to use a hydraulic dragnet held by core fish harvesters from the Îles-de-la-Madeleine are active.

Dates of season

Sub-areas 5A1 and 5A2: For 2010, from March 29 to July 3, and from September 1 to December 11, with exception for Sundays between 00:01 h and midnight.

Sub-area 5B: For 2010, from September 1 to December 11, with exception for Sundays between 00:01 h and midnight

Total Allowable Catches and Sharing Arrangements (if applicable)

Sub-area 5A1: 125 t in total for 2010
Sub-area 5A2: 55 t in total for 2010
Sub-area 5B: 100 t in total for 2010 and/or a maximum of 36 fishing days.

Management Measures

Minimum catch size: 76 mm (greatest length of the shell).

Fishing gear: Maximum one dragnet per vessel, with a maximum overall opening width of 2.13 meters (approximately 7 feet), and a 3.175 centimetres minimum spacing in between the bars.

Monitoring measures: Obligation to fill out a logbook prior to arrival at the wharf, 100% hails from sea; 50% dockside monitoring and 5% at-sea observer’s coverage.
