Species and Area

Quebec Region, Îles-de-la-Madeleine area, rock crab fishing in area 12.

The definition of the rock crab fishing area 12 is identical to the lobster fishing area 22 which is a coastal zone surrounding the Iles-de-la-Madeleine. 14 rock crab licenses held by core fish harvesters from the Iles-de-la-Madeleine are active.

From August 1 to November 27, 2010

Total Allowable Catches and Sharing Arrangements (if applicable)

Global allocation of 680 t, including 45 t set aside to cover the lobster harvesters incidental catches; With regards to the directed fishery, transferable individual allocation of 45 t per fish harvester.

Management Measures

Minimum catch size: 102 mm

Fishing gears: A combination of traps with a maximum inferior diameter not exceeding 914 mm and 1219 mm. The number of traps allowed is established according to the yield for each type of trap and cannot exceed 140 – 914 mm traps or 85 – 1219 mm traps. Traps shall be equipped with 4-65 mm circular escape vents, the top of the openings installed at a distance, calculated from the bottom of the trap, which does not exceed 50% of the trap height.

Monitoring measures: It is mandatory to fill out the logbook prior to arrival at the wharf; 100% hail in and sporadic dockside monitoring.

Others: Temporary transfers authorised (maximum 50% of the individual allocation). The rock crab and lobster fishery are not authorised simultaneously (a fish harvester who holds both licences).
