Species and Area

Porbeagle Shark in the Northwest Atlantic

Dates of season

The season begins on April 1, 2010 and ends on March 31, 2011 or earlier if notice is given that no further fishing is to take place because the quota for this fishery has been or is about to be reached.

Total Allowable Catches and Sharing Arrangements

Total Allowable Catch for Porbeagle Shark is 185 metric tonnes. Of this amount, 125t is the quota for the directed commercial shark fishery in the Maritimes Region; 10t is the quota for the directed commercial fishery in the Gulf and Quebec Regions combined; and the remaining 50t quota is reserved to account for bycatch of Porbeagle Shark in other fisheries.

Management Measures

Management measures for this fishery include the quota restrictions described above; limited number of participants; closed areas at certain times of the year to reduce fishing pressure on mature female sharks, and to avoid bycatch of Bluefin Tuna; 100% dockside monitoring of landings; completion of logbooks by all participants; prohibitions against finning; etc.
