Swordfish in the Northwest Atlantic
April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011
The Canadian Swordfish quota for 2010 consists of 5 metric tonnes for the offshore Tuna fleet; 1415.972t for the inshore longline fleet; and 131.007t for the inshore harpoon fleet.
Management measures for the Swordfish fleets include the quota restrictions described above; 100% Dockside Monitoring of landings for all fleets; at-sea observer coverage; completion of logbooks by all participants; closed areas at certain times of the year to limit Bluefin Tuna bycatch, and to protect large and broodstock Swordfish females; etc.
The Canadian Atlantic Swordfish and Other Tunas Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) can be found here:
The 2004-2006 IFMP will remain in effect until the new IFMP, currently in development, can be completed for this fishery. In addition to the IFMP, a Conservation Harvesting Plan is agreed upon each year by the fleet and DFO.
