Quebec Region, Îles-de-la-Madeleine area, toad crab (hyas species) fishing in area 12.
Toad crab Fishing Area 12 is a coastal zone surrounding the Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Nine (9) core fish harvesters from the Îles-de-la-Madeleine hold a license.
The fishing season will begin on June 14 and will end on November 26, 2010.
In sub-area 12A, the total allowable catch for 2010 is 227 t, divided equally between the 9 licence holders (25,2 t per fisher). Outside sub-area 12A, the fishery remains competitive.
Minimum catch size: 60 mm shell width, no females authorised.
Fishing gear: 65 traps having a maximum volume of 2.1 cubic meters and equipped with a suitable and biodegradable escape mechanism (such as required for the Snow crab traps). In addition, all traps must bear a valid tag delivered by DFO. Unless the meshing size is 40 mm or greater, each trap must bear 4-round, 65 mm escape devices, the top of which must be located at a distance, measured from the trap bottom, not exceeding half the total trap height.
Monitoring measures: 5% at-sea observer coverage, 100% hail in from sea and 25% dockside monitoring. It is mandatory to fill out the logbook prior to arrival at the wharf.
