Management Measures
Number of licences:
Sub-area 16A: 4 exploratory licences (not transferable)
Sub-area 16B et 16B-1: 7 exploratory licences (not transferable)
Sub-area 16C: 6 exploratory licences (not transferable)
Sub-area 16D: 4 exploratory licences (not transferable)
Sub-area 16E-1: Access reserved to fish harvesters of sub-areas 16B, 16B-1, 16C, 16D, (on request of licence conditions)
Sub-area 16E-2: Access reserved to fish harvesters of sub-areas 16B, 16B-1, 16C, 16D, (on request of licence conditions)
Minimum size:
102 mm (4’’) of carapace width
Type of pots:
150 traps for the sub-areas 16A, 16B-1, 16C, 16D
200 traps for the sub-areas 16B (excluding 16B-1), 16E-1 and 16E-2
The traps must have the following characteristics:
Mesh size: Min. 57 mm
Height: Min. 381 mm – Max. 508 mm
Escape vents: 4 x 65 mm located a maximum of 51 mm from the base
Lower diameter: Max. 914 mm
Upper diameter: Min. 457 mm
Tagging:
Each trap must bear a valid tag obtained from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).
Hail In:
Mandatory hail in to a local monitoring company for sub-areas 16A, 16B, 16B-1, 16C and 16D.
Logbook:
Log book is obligatory. When there are fishing activities, log book duly completed must be send to the DFO Office in Sept-Iles every week.
Simultaneous fisheries:
The holder of a rock crab fishing licence may not operate his lobster or/and his toad crab licence at the same time.
Participation clause:
For the 2010 season, the participation clause will be of 4 500 kg for the sub-areas 16A, 16B, 16B-1, 16C and 16D to renew the licence for the 2010 season. Catches must be recorded to DFO before December 31, 2010 by a buyer registered with the department.
Incidental catches:
Incidental catches cannot be retained.
Multi-years committee:
A meeting will be held before the 2011 season to do the assessment of the 2010 season.
Species at risk Act:
Pursuant to the Species at Risk Act (SARA), all by-catches of spotted wolffish, northern wolffish and leatherback Turtle must be returned to the water and released in the same location they were caught and, if the specimen is still alive, with as little harm as possible. Moreover, information regarding interactions with species at risk must be provided in the Species at risk section of the logbook.
Licence conditions:
A two working days deadline is necessary for the emission of the licence conditions.
