Lumpfish – 4S
The access is limited to vessel class A-52 for the Quebec Region, gillnets in area 4S.

Dates of season

May 7, 2010 to May 14, 2010

Management Measures

Fishing gear :

Authorized gear : Gillnet with a maximum length of 50 fathoms
Mesh size: Minimum mesh size of 267 mm (10 inches ½)
Number of nets: Maximum of 50 nets

Tagging :

All nets used for lumpfish fishing must bear a valid tag approved by DFO and bearing a sequential number. As discussed with the fish harvesters associations, permanent tags will be mandatory in 2010.

Logbook :

Logbook must be completed daily.

Hail out :

Hail out is mandatory in 2009 to ensure a better monitoring of this fishery.

100% dockside monitoring :

Dockside monitoring program (DMP) at 100% of the landings is mandatory in 2009.

Release of incidental catch :

You are authorized to return to the water any Skate, Dogfish, Lumpfish, Sculpin, Atlantic hagfish, Striped wolffish, live Winter Flounder less than 25 cm long, and if the fish is alive, in a manner that causes it the least harm. You must return to the water immediately all Atlantic halibut less than 81 centimetres and, if it is alive, in a manner that causes it the least harm.

Species at risk Act :

Pursuant to the Species at Risk Act (SARA), all by-catches of spotted wolffish, northern wolffish and leatherback Turtle must be returned to the water and released in the same location they were caught and, if the fish is still alive, with as little harm as possible. Moreover, information regarding interactions with species at risk must be provided in the Species at risk section of the logbook.

Licence conditions:

A two working days deadline is necessary for the issuance of the licence conditions. To obtain it, the fish harvesters must have a valid agreement with an at sea observers firm before requesting a licence condition near the area office.
