Seals are carnivorous marine mammals that have fins or flippers. Six species of seals inhabit Canadian waters – bearded seals, grey seals, harbour seals, harp seals, hooded seals and ringed seals. In March, vast numbers of harp seals and a smaller number of hooded seals gather on ice floes off the east coast of Canada to give birth to their young and, a few weeks later, to breed.
