This species is comprised of a large family of medium-to-small-sized fishes, mainly marine, but some "anadromous" – meaning that they spawn in freshwater and live most of their life in saltwater – and others restricted to fresh waters. Herring are plankton feeders. They usually swim near the surface in schools in coastal waters. When attacked, they confuse predators by shedding a flurry of scales.
