Capelin is a small marine and freshwater fish of the “Osmeridae” family. Capelin spawns offshore and on sandy beaches at the age of 2-6 years. Female capelin can reach 20 cm in length, while male capelin can reach up to 25 cm long. They are olive-coloured dorsally, shading to silver on their sides. Capelin is a significant source of food for other fishes, birds and marine mammals.
