By-catch in the shrimp fishery from Shrimp Fishing Areas 0-3, 1979 to 2009

By T. Siferd

Abstract

A summary of by-catch data from the shrimp fishery conducted in Shrimp Fishing Areas (SFAs) 0-3 in northern Canada is presented. By-catch summary weight data, recorded by observers for the four management areas are presented for years where data were available from 1979 to 2009. Data for commercial fish species, Greenland Halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides), Redfish (Sebastes spp.), Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua) and American Plaice (Hippoglossoides platessoides) and those marine fishes currently listed under the Species at Risk Act (SARA), Northern Wolfish (Anarhichas denticulatus), Spotted Wolffish (Anarhichas minor), and Striped Wolffish (Anarhichas lupus), includes measured by-catch data from Observer records. These data are only complete to the 2007/08 management year. The total number of each of these species caught is estimated for those years when measurement data were collected.
