Evaluation of the abundance of plankton gathered in spawning biomass assessment surveys of Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus L.) from 1982 to 2000

By F Grégoire and D. McKenzie

Abstract

This document proposes an index for measuring the general abundance of the plankton sampled in surveys conducted to estimate the biomass of the spawning stock of mackerel in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The highest annual values for this index correspond to the dominant year-classes of the mackerel. The gradual decline observed in this index in the 1990s is associated to a period when the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence were colder.
