Estimated Returns of Atlantic Salmon to the Miramichi River in 2012
Regional Science Special Response Process - Gulf Region
February 7, 2013
Moncton, New Brunswick
Chairperson: Wayne Fairchild (DFO Gulf Region)
Context
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stock assessments for Gulf Region are on a two-year peer reviewed assessment cycle. The most recent peer reviewed stock assessment of Atlantic salmon for Gulf Region rivers was for the 2011 return year (DFO 2012). Inseason indicators of abundance in 2012 suggested that the returns of Atlantic salmon to many areas of eastern Canada including the Miramichi River were much lower than in 2011 when the highest returns of salmon in recent years had been noted. In support of requests from watershed groups for an assessment of the returns of Atlantic salmon to the Miramichi River for 2012, DFO Science initiated a special science response process.
Objectives
The meeting will review:
- Summary of indicators of abundance of Atlantic salmon adults in the Miramichi River in 2012 and relative to previous years.
- Using the previously peer reviewed model, estimates of the returns of Atlantic salmon by size group (small salmon and large salmon) in 2012 to the Miramichi River overall and to each of the Northwest and Southwest branches of the Miramichi.
- Estimates of the total eggs in the returns, prior to any removals in river, relative to the conservation requirements.
- Description of trends of the biological characteristics including size at age (size group), proportion female, and proportion two-sea-winter and repeat spawners.
