Seventh meeting of the Canadian Eel Science Working Group; October 14-16, 2009

Chairpersons: Yves Mailhot and Geoff Veinott

Summary

The Canadian Eel Science Working Group (CESWoG) met for the seventh time from October 14-16, 2009 at the Future Inns in Moncton, New Brunswick. The purpose of the meeting was to:

  1. plan a strategy for addressing a formal request for advice from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) on the following questions:
    1. How do you assess cumulative impact of multiple dams in a watershed?
    2. What is best methodology for setting recruitment and escapement targets for a watershed, taking into account cumulative impacts?
    3. What is the current status of eels in Canada?
    4. What progress has been made toward meeting the goal of a 50% reduction in mortality, in both weight and numbers, relative to the baseline of average mortality in 1997-2002?
  2. provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of new and emerging eel science in Canada.

Since there was no formal request for advice by DFO, no advice is provided in this document. However, it was decided to return questions a and b to the Canadian Eel Working Group, to whom CESWoG reports, for clarification. It was also decided that questions c and d would be handled within DFO regions using a common template which could then be combined to provide a national perspective.

The terms of reference for the meeting are in Appendix 1 and the Agenda is in Appendix 2. The meeting participants included representatives from: Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Science, DFO Management, Parks Canada, Provence of Quebec, Aboriginal groups, academics, students, Ontario Power Generation, and eel industry representatives. A list of participants is given in Appendix 3.
