Proceedings of the Zonal Advisory Process on the Pre-COSEWIC Review and Evaluation of Progress on Management Objectives for the American Eel; August 31 to September 3, 2010

Summary

A zonal advisory process meeting was held August 31 to September 3, 2010 in Ottawa (ON) to conduct a science peer review of information on American Eel from eastern Canada. The zonal meeting was conducted in response to the request for an updated report by COSEWIC and to a request for advice from DFO Ecosystem and Fisheries Management (FAM). The first two days of the meeting addressed the review of science information on American Eel of relevance to the development of a status report of the species by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). The second part of the zonal advisory meeting addressed the extent of the progress on achieving the management objectives outlined in the draft Management Plan for American Eel. Participants at the science review included DFO Oceans and Science personnel from five DFO administrative regions (Central and Arctic, Gulf, Maritimes, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Quebec) as well as the National Capital Region, personnel from DFO Species at Risk, DFO Habitat Management and Ecosystems and Fisheries Management, from Parks Canada, from the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, from the fishing industry, from hydroelectric industry, from aboriginal peoples, from university, from the COSEWIC report contract author, and from external experts. An advisory report specific to the management questions was prepared. A total of seven research documents are anticipated to be published.
