Summary

The Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS) of DFO was requested by DFO’s Habitat Management Program to conduct a peer review of the technical reports used to assess impacts of water withdrawals from the Lower Athabasca River for oil sands industrial use. This CSAS Proceedings document is a synthesis of the discussion and presentations that occurred during the workshop held May 31 – June 4, 2010 in Calgary, AB. This report is solely intended to reflect the discussions in the workshop; as such the language used is lay language. This Proceedings document is provided as a supplement to the previously published Science Advisory Report (Science Advisory Report 2010/055, Science Evaluation of Instream Flow Needs (IFN) for the Lower Athabasca River). Discussions following from the presentations covered data gaps, assumptions and uncertainties were used to develop the Scientific Advisory Report (SAR). The SAR is available on the CSAS website. Copies of the input reports which were reviewed are available from the Cumulative Environmental Monitoring Association.
