National Workshop on Developing Guidelines for Terms and Concepts Used in the Species at Risk Program; June 10-11, 2008

Chairperson: Jake Rice
Editor: Gary Rawn

Summary

The National Science Workshop on Guidelines for Terms and Concepts Used in the Species at Risk Act (SARA) Program was held to assist in the development of guidelines for the nationally consistent interpretation of specific terms and concepts used in the preparation of Recovery Potential Assessments or in other activities related to the SARA. These terms included: harm / harass; damage / destroy / destruction; residence; prey and hosts as a dimension of Critical Habitat; acoustic environment as a dimension of Critical Habitat; feasibility of recovery; threats; and recovery targets. The agenda and the Terms of Reference for the meeting were developed by a Steering Committee that consisted of representatives from each Region and Sector. The meeting was attended by more than 60 DFO staff from across Canada.

To facilitate the discussion at the meeting, working papers were prepared for each term and were distributed to the participants prior to the meeting. These papers are published in the Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS) Research Document 2009/082. The authors of these papers gave a short presentation during the meeting to initiate the discussion of each term.

Key conclusions from the meeting are outlined below in the summary from the CSAS Science Advisory Report (2009/065) (SAR) that was prepared on the basis of the working papers and the discussions at the workshop. An Editorial Committee was established, with representatives from each Region and each National Headquarters (NHQ) Sector, to ensure that the SAR reflected the deliberations and conclusions of the workshop.
