Summary
As part of the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program, zonal priority setting workshops were planned for the Pacific, Atlantic, and Central and Arctic areas. The goals of the workshops were to identify AIS monitoring priorities in terms of species, pathways for introduction, and geographic locations.
A workshop was held October 3 and 4, 2006 for the Central and Arctic Zone at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington, Ontario to discuss and improve the monitoring of AIS. The objectives of the workshop included establishing a list of priority species, key pathways for introduction to be monitored, and priority locations for monitoring AIS. This was done to provide advice to managers as to where limited AIS monitoring resources should be directed. The workshop also provided information about ongoing AIS monitoring programs and identified science-based methods currently being used to monitor AIS.
The workshop focused on the importance of monitoring vectors that transport AIS. Primary vectors were identified and linked to specific AIS. Locations were identified where vectors and their associated AIS are most likely to impact ecosystems. The workshop identified a number of challenges facing the AIS program in the Central and Arctic Zone and arrived at some preliminary conclusions regarding the monitoring of AIS and their associated vectors.
