National Science Workshop:
Review of Scientific Information on the Impacts of Seismic Sound on Fish, Invertebrates, and Marine Mammals Workshop II, 2008 ; 26-27 March 2008

Chairperson: Jake Rice

Summary

A workshop to develop a “Decision Framework for Seismic Survey Referrals” held in March 2003 produced an inventory of ecological factors that DFO should consider when dealing with referrals for seismic surveys in Canadian waters. A National Advisory Process meeting on the Evaluation of Seismic Impacts in May 2004 resulted in the Habitat Status Report (2004/002) Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat document, “Review of Scientific Information on Impacts of Seismic Sound on Fish, Invertebrates, Marine Turtles and Marine Mammals”. With the advancement of knowledge regarding the effects of noise on aquatic organisms since 2004 workshop and Habitat Status Report (2004/002), the Oceans and Habitat Management Sector requested Science Sector to review the recent literature that has become available and determine whether the original advisory requires updating. Prior to this workshop, that was held March 26-27th in Ottawa, two review papers were produced that reviewed new literature for fish and invertebrates and a separate paper for marine mammals since 2004. Participation at the Workshop included personnel from DFO Science, and Oceans and Habitat Management Sectors, as well as experts from academia, Environmental Non-Government Organizations (ENGOs), industry and the Inuvialuit Joint Fisheries Management Board. The reports resulting from this workshop include: Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS) Proceedings document, a modified Habitat Status Report (HSR 2004/002), summary of the presentations and working papers, research documents posted on the CSAS website. A workshop specifically focusing on mitigation measures was recommended and tentatively planned for Fall 2008.
