On June 4th, at Tahsis, a beach seine and intertidal study will be held with Captain Myers Elementary School. On June 5th, Oceans Day activities at the Royal Roads University include: marimba music, food & ice cream, storm drain marking, watershed model demonstration, live tank, fry release, Portapond aquatic invertebrate study, Eco-rowing educational excursions, Colwood Creek interpretive walk, pre-school environment education program, and "Schools for Salmon" art project.

At Port Hardy, there will be a guided beach walk with the assistance of members of the Top Island Econauts Dive Club for the Young Naturalist's Club on June 5th. Also in Port Hardy on June 6th, there will be a skills dive organized by the Top Island Econauts Dive Club at Bear Cove - open to all with a valid diving certification card.

There will be guided tours of the Whale Interpretive Centre at Telegraph Cove on June 5th and 6th from 1 to 5pm.

On June 6th, the Broughton Archipelago Stewardship Society will be organizing an eelgrass mapping and monitoring workshop with biologist Leanna Boyer at Sointula, Bear Cove.

On June 6th, there will also be an eelgrass information session from 12pm to 2pm at Sunshine Coast, Capilano College in Sechelt and a beach seine at 2:30pm at Porpoise Bay Provincial Park.

An oceans celebration event will take place at Blackie Spit, Crescent Beach in Surrey on June 5th with the Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society. In Nitinat, on June 17th, a school-wide Oceans Day celebration will take place at the Ditidaht First Nation school.

In Prince Rupert on June 12th, DFO, the North Coast Biotoxin Society and World Wildlife Fund are partnering to showcase their Oceans Day/Seafest Celebration, including a dunk tank, a traveling tide pool, a dissection table and games.

In the first week of August, DFO will be participating in Port Hardy’s FILOMI Days, an annual community festival, on North Island.


 

Central & Arctic Region

A number of ocean-related community activities, games, events, entertainment including a community feast, a parade and a fishing derby will take placed in Holman, NWT. DFO, the Fisheries Joint Management Committee, and others will be setting up displays at the event. While Oceans Day is celebrated nationally on June 8th, celebrations in the region will take place on July 24th and will be held in conjunction with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement.

 

National Capital Region

On June 8th, there will be an electronic mapping display in the lobby of 200 Kent Street, as well as a gathering where the Deputy Minister will speak of the Canadian commitment to Oceans through the Oceans Action Plan.

An Oceans Day festival will take place at the Canadian Museum of Nature from June 8th to 11th.

 

Quebec Region

On June 5th, DFO will host a shoreline cleanup day in Gaspé Bay including music, contests, prizes and food.

 

Gulf Region

The activities for Oceans Day include a post-card contest at schools in Tracadie, Charlottetown, Antigonish and Shediac.

There will also be a clean-up of part of the beach near Shediac with sector schools and volunteer DFO employees on June 1st.

Oceans Day barbeque planned
The P.E.I. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, Aquaculture and Forestry is joining with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans to host an Oceans Day barbeque at Peakes Quay Saturday from noon until 2 p.m., in conjunction with the Week on the Waterfront.

The event will feature information on the P.E.I. fishery, the proposed Basin Head Marine Protected Area, Island seafood recipes, colouring booklets and a colouring contest for children, and numerous draws for prizes.

The theme, Discover the Ocean in Your Backyard, invites action to protect marine and freshwater ecosystems.

World Oceans Day is an annual event first established in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

 

Maritimes Region

DFO will partner with the Fisherman's Cove Development Association in Eastern Passage, N.S., to celebrate Oceans Day in conjunction with the official opening of a Marine Interpretative Centre from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 6th. DFO is planning on exhibiting displays on marine species at risk, the newly declared Gully Marine Protected Area, and habitat stewardship. Also, the rescue cutter, CCGS Sambro, will open for tours.

At the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO), there will be an Oceans Day poster contest (grades 7-12). Winners will be invited to come into BIO for a tour, a presentation and a meet & greet followed by lunch on one of the Coast Guard ships.

The Fishermen and Scientists Research Society is planning on having their annual "Oceans 11" awards presentation to students at BIO on Oceans Day.

There are also several planned events in St. Andrews, N.B. with DFO and the Atlantic Salmon Federation, Huntsman Marine Science Centre, Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre, and the N.B. Dept. of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture. These are as follows:

  • Interpretive Beach walk with elementary school kids
  • Beach Clean-ups
  • Display at school carnival -including touch tank
  • Open House at Huntsman Aquarium
  • Talk at Sunbury Shores on beach debris collection study.

 

Newfoundland Region

On June 8th, DFO will host a morning and afternoon variety show in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Centre auditorium for grade 5 students from the Avalon East School District. The variety show will feature educational, fun and interactive presentations on DFO oceans-related topics.

The Central and Labrador Area Office in Grand Falls- Windsor Office will visit a local school to show ocean-related presentations and videos and will host a BBQ & Beach Sweep.

On June 5th at the Avalon Mall in St. John’s, an oceans display will be set up outside The Body Shop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. DFO employees will spend the day talking with mall visitors about Oceans Day and Body Shop Staff will paint various sea creature shapes on kids’ faces. Posters, pamphlets and other promotional items will be distributed.

On June 11th, DFO employees will participate in the clean up of the shoreline of the Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John’s.
