Home World Oceans Day 2005 - Events and ActivitiesIf you want to know what Canadians are doing to celebrate Oceans Day from coast to coast, you've come to the right place! Fisheries and Oceans Canada and many other organizations hold events and activities to celebrate the life-giving role of oceans worldwide, and to engage Canadians in stewardship activities. Find out what's happening in your region by visiting the Canadian Wildlife Federation website. Oceans Day Lecture - Tsunamis 101 - June 8thBy Doug Bancroft A Free Evening Speaker Session and Reception in Celebration of Oceans Day 2005 Canada is celebrating Oceans Day on June 8th. Join in this year’s festivities with a free evening speaker session at the Canadian Museum of Nature. Tsunamis 101, presented by Douglas Bancroft, Director of Oceanography and Climate Branch with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, will take you on a unique journey to the tsunami prone regions of Canada. You will discover what regions of Canada are at risk and how Canada and the world are coordinating much-needed global tsunami warning systems. Douglas Bancroft coordinates Canada’s participation in national and international tsunami warning systems and has given this anticipated presentation the world over. The session will take place in English with a bilingual question and answer period to follow. Join us for a free reception beforehand at 6:30 pm in the museum’s grand foyer. Sample the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s newly launched bird-friendly coffee, learn about the past 10 years of ocean education, and take home this year’s Oceans Day poster. Light refreshment will be served.
