Development of Improved Diagnostics for Renibacterium salmoninarum, Causative Agent of Bacterial Kidney Disease in Atlantic Salmon

Summary:
Bacterial Kidney Disease (BKD) in Atlantic Salmon is caused by the pathogen Renibacterium salmoninarum. This disease is slow to develop and can cause considerable economic losses to the aquaculture industry. The objective of this project was to develop improved diagnostics for the BKD pathogen through the development and validation of best sampling practices and diagnostic tests. A new diagnostic test (qPCR assay) was developed and tested across multiple sample types. This new method was compared to previous existing methods on a large number of samples and sample types to determine the best diagnostic tools and sampling practices. Project results indicate that the qPCR assay is the most sensitive method for detection of the pathogen. This new method of detecting the BKD pathogen will improve the available health management tools and overall sustainable production of Atlantic salmon.
