Summary:
The two year project aimed to set up a multifunctional shellfish storage plant operating in a closed circuit and taking advantage of a new technology (SKIM) developed in France. This system lets bacteria and dissolved organic material be removed while allowing aeration and water circulation. The proponent has developed an infrastructure that allows storage and purification of the shellfish and minimizes the risks of introducing illnesses and invasive species, in addition to allowing a safety certification program to be established for the product that is more effective while being more flexible. Implementation of the closed containment system, the design of tanks, control of water flows, certification of the laboratory and the purification strategy were all achieved successfully.
