Summary:
The project led by the Interprovincial Partnership for Sustainable Freshwater Aquaculture Development Inc (IPSFAD) provided support for Canadian participation in the World Wildlife Foundation’s (WWF) on-going stakeholder consultation process and used those discussions as a springboard to develop a Canadian national strategic plan for the freshwater rainbow trout sector.
A Canadian delegation ensured an important presence at the 2010 WWF meeting in Verona, Italy. This team was responsible for presenting Canada’s unique national concerns to the table and for helping direct decisions in a manner such that any adopted certification measures will be reasonably applicable to the Canadian industry.
The project included a series of consultations, strategic planning, assistance at WWF’s Dialogue meeting and development and the production of a final report. So as to tap existing knowledge from similar efforts, coordination with the Canadian Aquaculture Standard’s Forum (CASF) and the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) was valuable to the team’s efforts and served to avoid duplication of efforts. This was accomplished by holding timely meetings via teleconference with all members and representatives of the CASF and CAIA.
