Summary:
The objective of this project was to develop and test technology that would enable real-time tracing and management tools for the shellfish industry. The system developed through this project by Coles Mussel Farm was tailored for a medium to large shellfish rearing operation; however, the system can be expanded with a small additional capital cost, or adapted to smaller operations. The system could be applied industry-wide as access is based on purchasing licensing fees for the software.
Food safety and security are fundamental requirements for the shellfish industry. The benefits of a real-time management tool that would assist in monitoring operational activities at the farm level, including detecting the presence of harmful algae blooms, cannot be overstated. It is anticipated that this monitoring technology would be of interest to other sectors of the shellfish industry, including oysters, quahogs and clams, as well as to the commercial lobster fishery.
