This one-year project aimed to improve the process for gluing oysters on ropes by improving the process of glue distribution, developing technology for drying oysters, assessing the use of hot glue and developing a float for the farming structure of horizontally glued oysters. Several technological aspects were developed or improved through this project. These improvements will help reduce production costs and increase the profitability of this farming technique. The process of transferring glue from the cartridge to the oyster shells can be undertaken using compressed air, which makes for better control and greater speed in glue application. Oysters can now be glued from several stations, which in turn should increase the daily capacity of glued oysters. The development of a dryer for drying the shells allows uniform drying – something that was previously undertaken outdoors in sunlight. The problems raised by rainy or cold weather have now been resolved: oysters can be dried at any time and over a predictable timeframe. Finally, the buoyancy of the farming structure has been greatly improved and promising new means have been developed for elaboration of a better farming structure. In particular, a lighter structure will be made possible by eliminating the galvanized iron structure supporting ropes and using floats with aluminum cross bars, which should be a strategic investment in the very long term.

AIMAP funding enabled Brantville Aquaculture to improve some important elements of the horizontal gluing of oysters, and to make this information available to companies interested in using this technique. The workforce is well trained and the tools are in place or have been recommended with a view to supporting marketing efforts. In terms of biological and commercial productivity, growing oysters by gluing them on ropes yields significantly better results than growing them in floating bags.
