[Lea Murphy] “My name is Lea Murphy, I’m working with the Coles Farm Mussel Farm operation; I assist them in project management.”

[Trevor Carr] “My name is Trevor Carr and I’m a captain of a boat for Coles Mussel Farm and I’ve worked here for six years.”

[Trevor Carr, in boat] “The mussel industry has kept people in the community, in provides quite a few jobs in the local area.  Between the processing and growing of the mussels there’s approximately 120 to 150 jobs created in the local area.  The biggest challenges right now are trying to fight the invasive species, tunicates and water-squirts and such.

In the last 10 years, it’s just been mostly the invasive species has been our main issue.”

[Lea Murphy] “These leases are all owned by the Coles Mussel Farm operation.

The market price, the farm gate price to the producer went from 50 cents in ’81 to about 65 cents in 2009.  So efficiencies, efficiencies are so very important in terms of viability of the farm.

Cold Mussel Farm participated in, made an application to the AIMAP program and Coles Mussel Farm has created a project and partnerships with a major technical support group in Charlottetown.  They provided the technical supports to create this mapping system.”

[Lea Murphy, speaking with Trevor Carr] “…Or you could be pressure washing…bio-filling.
