Finfish Species

There are eight main species of ocean and freshwater finfish currently being raised across Canada. Atlantic salmon is the main fish species grown in saltwater. Rainbow trout is the main fish species grown in fresh water.

We are working on providing profiles for all the aquaculture-related species. This is a work in progress. Species profiles will be added as they become available. Thank you for your patience.

MARINE FINFISH

These are the species that are grown in salt water.

FRESHWATER FINFISH

These are the fish species that are raised in ponds, freshwater lakes and bays, or in the case of tilapia (a warm water fish), reared in land-based recirculation facilities.

These are the six fish species that are currently being tested for their potential for wide-scale, commercial production.
